Court jails scrap thief

Mark Mensah, a 28-year-old scrap dealer, has been jailed eight months in hard labour for stealing two metres belonging to Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL).

The suspect was convicted on his own plea.

The Sekondi-Magistrate Court presided over by Mr. Thomas Afedie, ordered that the items be returned to the GWCL.

According to the prosecutor, Police Chief Inspector Gifty Arthur, around 1000 hours on March 5, Mr. Alfred Yeboah, the complainant, who is a worker of the GWCL and resident of Takoradi Chapel Hill, reported to the police that, he saw Mark loitering around the office premises.

He said at about 1230 hours the same day, the mother of the complainant saw the convict carrying metres in his polythene bag and, therefore, raised the alarm, but he fled.

However, the convict was given a chase by residents and was arrested and handed over to the police.
