Takoradi, June 9, GNA 97 A Takoradi Circuit court on Wednesday jailed Isaac Mireku, a carpenter, for 10 years for possessing narcotic drugs without authority.
He pleaded not guilty to the offence.
Chief Inspector Alice Parker-Wilson told the court presided over by Mr Kwasi Boakye that, the complainants in the case are personnel of the Drug Enforcement Unit of the Police Service while the convict is a carpenter residing at Amanful, a suburb of Takoradi.
She said on October 15, 2009, at about 1800 hours, the unit was on patrol to clamp down on narcotic drug peddlers in the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis and visited Amanful where they had a tip off that, Mireku was dealing in narcotics.
The unit went to the house of Mireku and searched his premises and 25 wrappers suspected to be Indian hemp were retrieved from his room. The convict claimed ownership of the substances and explained that when he smoked the stuff it enabled him to work as a carpenter and helped cater for his children at school.
He was arrested and charged with the offence and arraigned before the court for prosecution.
