Court imposes fine on thief

Tema, Feb. 04, GNA – A 29 year-old unemployed man was on Tuesday sentenced to a five million cedis fine or in default five years jail by the Tema Circuit Court “A” for stealing a television set and a car headlight at the Tema Port.

Police Inspector Adolphus Otchere told the Court presided over by Mr Charles Asiedu that on January 25, 2004, Eric Tetteh, who pleaded guilty was arrested by the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA) security for stealing the headlight valued at 100,000 cedis and was sent to the Harbour Police.

He said Eric was detained at the police cells and was released at 4 p.m. on police enquiry bail on January 27 to report on the following day.

Three hours after his release, Tetteh unlawfully entered the main harbour at 7:20p.m. and stole a 26-inch used television set valued at 1.3 million cedis from a truck parked in front of the state warehouse. Inspector Otchere said the Port Security arrested Eric again with the television set and sent to the Police.
