Court fines driver for knocking pedestrian

Rabiu Omar, a driver in-charge of a Hyundai bus which knocked down Mr. Ernest Agyarko, has been sentenced to a fine of GH¢180.00 by the Akim Oda Magistrate Court in the Birim Central Municipality.

Omar who pleaded guilty to careless, inconsiderate driving and negligently causing harm would pay additional GH¢150.00 as compensation to the victim, Mr Agyarko.

Failure to pay the fine, the convict would go to prison for 18 months, while he would serve another 10 months prison term, failure to pay the compensation.

Briefing the court presided over by Mr. Albert Owusu Annor, Police Chief Inspector Patience Nyame Darko, said on February 15, 2012 at about 1030 hours, Omar was then driving the bus with passengers on board from Akim Oda to Agona Swedru.

Chief Inspector Darko said when the vehicle reached a section of the road down the Oda Government Hospital, it knocked down Mr. Agyarko who was at that time crossing the road.

She said the victim sustained injuries and was rushed to the Oda Government Hospital where he was admitted.**
