Court fines an unemployed and driver for stealing

Sekondi, July 19, GNA – A Sekondi District Magistrate’s Court has fined Abubakari Kaburi, a 27-year-old unemployed and Thomas Abire, 58-year-old driver, GH¢360 each for stealing and deceiving a public officer.

In default the accused persons would serve 9 months imprisonment each.

The Court ordered that the vehicle used in conveying the stolen livestock be auctioned if nobody claimed ownership with proper documentation by end of July.

Police Inspector Gifty Arthur, told the court that at about 0200 hours on May 2 the Police had a tip-off that some men had stolen sheep and goats at Brifiyeduro and Senchem and had loaded them into a private car that was heading towards Daboase.

She said the Police, therefore, mounted a checkpoint and at 0315 hours, a Hyundai Sanata Saloon car arrived at the checkpoint from the direction of Brofoyeduro and Senchem.

Inspector Arthur said on seeing the Police, the driver tried to reverse but all three men aboard the vehicle fled into the bush.

She said when the vehicle was searched, 5 dead sheep and 2 goats as well as 16 live sheep and 6 goats were found.

She said the vehicle and the animals were taken to the Daboase Police Station and later the incident was announced on local FM Stations.

Some drivers spotted Kaburi and another person emerging from the bush heading towards Beposo.

She said the drivers managed to arrest Kaburi and handed him over to the police but his partner escaped.

She said while investigation was in progress, Abire went to the Police Station with expired documents of the car used in the stealing claiming to be the owner and driver.

Inspector Arthur said further investigations proved that Abire was involved in the stealing and he and Kaburi were charged.
