Court convicts man for supply of narcotics

An Accra circuit court, presided over by Mr Francis Obiri, has deferred the sentencing of Michael Dzogbey, for the supply of 772 wraps of dried leaves.

Michael, 35, pleaded guilty to the charge with an explanation, but the court after convicting the suspect however deferred sentencing to December 22.

Initially, the police charged the convict for possession of narcotic drug without lawful authority.

Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Aidan Derry told the court that the complainants in the case were personnel of the Anti-Armed Robbery Squad of the CID headquarters.

He said the personnel embarked on an operation in Adeiso, a village near Nsawam, to arrest a suspected Arms dealer, who was on their wanted list.

The prosecution said but while in the village the team gathered intelligence that, the convict, a notorious drug peddler and resident in the area had imported quantity of plant material suspected to be wee.

He said the team quickly proceeded to the house of the convict and met him distributing some to other people but on seeing the police, they all took to their heels but the convict was arrested.

DSP Derry said the convict led the police to his room and a search conducted saw the wraps of dried leaves, quantity of similar dried leaves and three gallons containing liquid substance all suspected to be narcotics.

During interrogation and in his caution statement, the convict admitted the offence and mentioned one Owusu as his source of supply but failed to lead police to arrest him.
