Court adjourns narcotic case

An Accra Circuit Court, Presided over by Mr Francis Obiri has adjourned the case involving one Nana Darkwah, self-employed, who was said to have in his possession narcotic drugs without lawful authority.

The court suspended the case to August 27 after the prosecution asked for a short adjournment to receive advice from the Attorney Generals Department.

Nana was said to have in his possession a parcel of dried leaves suspected to be narcotic drugs without lawful authority. He pleaded not guilty to the charge and was remanded by the court.

Prosecuting, Police Inspector Kwabena Adu told the court that the complainant is a police inspector stationed at Amasaman while the accused person is self-employed and a resident of Accra New Town.

He said on August 10, the complainant was in charge of Amasaman day patrol team patrolling Amasaman and its environs, when they had information about some land guards harassing land developers at Ayawaso.

The prosecution said on their way, they spotted the accused person sitting beside a wooden kiosk with a plastic bowl containing a slab of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp, a box of match sticks, a packet of King Size cigarettes, and a lighter.

He told the court that on seeing the police, the accused person took to his heels. The police took custody of the exhibits and chased and arrested him.

Police Inspector Adu said Nana, however, denied the offence in his caution statement.
