The Electoral Commission will from Tuesday, January 17 begin processes for the election of 10 people as Council of State members to represent each of the 10 regions in the country. The elections of Council of State members are in line with Article 89 (2) (C) of the country’s constitution.
Persons seeking to contest the elections, which have been scheduled for February 9 at the various regional capitals, are expected to pick nomination forms between January 17 and 19 at the regional offices of the Commission. A statement issued by the Head of Communications at the EC, Eric Dzakpasu, said the Commission would begin receiving the filled nomination forms between January 20and 26.
The Council of State, established by Article 89 of the country’s constitution, is enjoined to “counsel the President in the performance of his functions”.
The Council is required to “consider and advise the President or any other authority in respect of appointment which is required by the Constitution or any other law to be made in accordance with the advice of, or in consultation with by the Council” Anyone seeking to be elected as Council of State member must be Ghanaian citizen, a valid voter with a sound mind and must be a resident of or hail from the region he seeks to represent.
