Corn miller jailed for defilement

Accra, Feb. 25, GNA – A 41 year-old corn miller on Friday stunned the audience at a Circuit Court in Accra when he admitted defiling a 14-year-old girl three months ago but claimed that he could not be jailed.

According to Samuel Kumah he committed the offence long before he was brought to court. The court, however, convicted him on his own plea of guilty and sentenced him to seven years imprisonment in hard labour.

The case as presented by Police Inspector Ivy Agadia was that in November last year, the victim was returning from school in the company of a friend at about 1700 hours. When she reached Kumah’s house, he gave her 2,000 cedis to buy him sachet water. Kumah then asked the victim’s friend to go home. When she returned, Kumah asked her to bring the water into his room where he sexually abused her.

The prosecution said Kumah threatened to attack the victim should she disclose the ordeal to anyone, especially her parents. The prosecution said the victim kept the ordeal to herself until her mother noticed some changes in the way she walked. During interrogation, the victim told her mother about the ordeal. The victim’s mother reported the incident to the police and medical was issued. When the victim’s mother confronted Kumah, he gave out 250,000 cedis to enable the victim to be catered for. Kumah was arrested and he admitted the offence.
