Corn miller jailed 10 years for defilement

Kumasi, Aug 12, GNA – A 20-year-old resident of Achina in the Ejisu-Juaben District of Ashanti, has been sentenced to a 10-year incarceration by a Kumasi circuit court for defiling a 12-year-old girl. Akwasi Sarpong, who pleaded guilty, was convicted on his own plea. Prosecuting, Police Chief Inspector Evelyn Addo told the court presided over by Mr Adutwum Mmorosa that the victim lived with her father, a farmer and the complainant in the case at Achina, where the convict also operated a corn mill for a living. She said on that fateful day, Sarpong sexually assaulted the victim at the mill, who was sent by the father to mill corn for their evening meal.

The victim then went back after milling the corn and kept the ordeal she had earlier gone through to herself. However, her ill health and unusual gait the next day gave her away.

The probing questions of the observant father obliged the victim to reveal the secret and expose the convict. Chief Inspector Addo said the complainant then made a report to the Ejisu police, where accused was arrested. A medical examination, which took place at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH), confirmed that the girl’s hymen had been broken. 12 Aug. 05
