Convict found hanging in Police cells

Kofi Segbe, 31, serving a two year imprisonment for stealing, is alleged to have committed suicide in the Sogakope Police cells on Monday July 15.

The convict was serving the two year term after he was sentenced by a Circuit Court at Sogakope.

A source close to the Sogakope Police told the Ghana News Agency on condition of anonymity that Segbe hanged himself in the washroom of the Police cell with a piece of blanket provided in the cell.

The source told the GNA that Segbe was sentenced for stealing some tins of tomatoes and confectionaries, but before he could be transferred to the Ho prison, another case of stealing 17 computers belonging to a basic school in the area was brought against him.

The source said the deceased was, therefore, put in the cells for further investigations.

He said other inmates found him hanging from the rafters in the cell washroom at about 0300 hours.

The body has been sent to the Sogakope District Hospital morgue pending autopsy.

Mr. Innocent Gbedzi, Assembly member for Hlevi electoral area and a relative of Segbe said the family suspects’ foul play, questioning why the family was not informed before Segbe’s body was taken to the morgue.

He said the family is demanding an investigation into the case.
