Convert ‘Mahama Day School’ into clinic – Diaso Residents

The people of Diaso in the Upper Denkyira West District are appealing to authorities to convert an abandoned day Senior High School constructed by former President Mahama into a clinic, teacher or nursing training college.

The Diaso Day Community SHS has since construction been left unused by the people who are citing long travel distance as the main reason, indicating there is no bus to convey students to and from the school.

Again, they said there is an existing SHS which can absorb students from all the communities in the area. This was revealed by the Central Regional Minister, Kwamina Duncan when he visited the school together with his deputy and the Member of Parliament for the area, Michael Nsowah Gyan.

“The community holds the view that the place be used for a clinic because that is their number one need,” Mr Duncan told journalists, adding some other people have also suggested the school be converted into either a nursing or teacher trainee college.

“There is also the question of the place being converted into a nursing training college so you see that the needs are varied,” indicating that they would hold a stakeholder meeting to deliberate on the issue and decide what to do with the school which has now become a white elephant.

“We’ll sit and consider which best the structure can serve; whether allow it to be as it was built for, which is a senior high school or as the community people are asking and whether if we did that, it will indeed have all that is required to operate the place as a clinic.

He said if at the end it is decided that the place be maintained as a school, then a decision would have to be taken to procure a bus that would transport students to and from the school daily.

The MP, Mr. Nsowa Gyan said he has received similar request from the people and also suggested a broader consultation to make a determination on it. “The structure is here. It is not being used.

We have a secondary school here which can serve all the communities here. [There should be a] stakeholder meeting so that we can use it either as a district hospital or a training college or nursing school,” he said.
