Goaso (B/A), Feb. 19, GNA – Controversy is raging on in Goaso, capital of Asunafo North Municipality, over a demolition exercise being carried out by the Goaso traditional council. The exercise has displaced traders and some workers who have threatened to go on transfer because the destruction of their backyard gardens was a disincentive to them.
Led by Nana Kwasi Baffour Bosomprah, Omanhene of Goaso, the exercise has also affected some departmental heads, whilst lanes for pedestrians have been earmarked for a lorry park and market. “The exercise is a disincentive to us and if it should continue we shall all go on transfer en bloc,” one of the workers said.
Alhaji Abdul Rahaman, Municipal Coordinating Director, when contacted expressed regret about the incident, saying it was the duty of the Assembly to carry out the expansion of the market. He appealed to the affected people to exercise restraint whilst the Assembly dialogued with the traditional council to address the issue.
When the GNA contacted the Omanhene on phone, he said the traditional authorities collaborated with the town council in effecting the demolition exercise, meant to give Goaso a fitting facelift. He said the exercise was embarked on in view of the deplorable conditions in the town, especially around the market. “Yam sellers and other traders were carrying out their activities near the public place of convenience, which was not a very healthy sign. Domestic animals were tethered behind bungalows and it is an eyesore,” Nana Bosomprah said. He appealed to citizens in the municipality to support the exercise as the traditional council was determined to help improve conditions in the municipality. “We must as a people rather focus on addressing pertinent problems such as lack of doctors as well as an ambulance at the hospital,” the chief said.
