Contracts signed for regional street lighting programme

Accra, May 5, GNA – The Ministry of Energy has signed agreements with three companies for the construction of street lights in the regional capitals. A statement released by the Ministry on Tuesday said the agreements were signed with the respective companies by the Deputy Minister of Energy, Mr Emmanuel Kofi Buah. It said the Deputy Minister stressed the importance the government attached to the programme as it sought to improve upon security at night in the regional capitals and also ensure adequate provision of illumination on major streets.

The statement said Elsewedy Electrical Ghana Limited would carry out the street lighting in Bolgatanga, Wa, Sunyani, Takoradi and Ho. China International Water and Electrical Corporation would carry out the Second Phase of the Tema street lighting project while Philips BV of the Netherlands has commenced the Accra and Kumasi street lighting projects.

The statement said all projects were expected to be completed this year.

Mr Buah said the street lighting projects covering Koforidua, Sekondi, Tamale and Cape Coast were carried out between 2007 and 2008.
