Contractors to update skills for efficiency

Sunyani (B/A), Jan. 11, GNA – Members of the Association of Building and Civil Contractors of Ghana are to benefit from a training programme this year to update their skills to ensure efficiency. Mr. Owusu Kumi, Chairman of the Brong-Ahafo Regional Branch of the Association, speaking in Sunyani at an end-of-year meeting of the Association urged members of the branch to participate in the programme, arranged by the National Secretariat.

He said the National Secretariat was also negotiating with the Ministry of Education for jobs for members when the Ministry’s housing project started and stressed the need for the Association to be well resourced to make it more effective.

“It is regrettable to note that the Association continues to suffer serious operational constraints due to members’ failure and inability to pay their dues and subscription fees,” he said and appealed to them to change the attitude to ensure the efficient running of the Association.

Mr. Samuel Obeng, National Chairman, expressed concern about shoddy work by some members and said the Association shared the concern of the government and the public on the issue.

“As a contractors Association, we share the concern of government and the general public over the issue of shoddy work by some contractors,” he said and announced that the Association had put in place measures to ensure the execution of contracts according to the specifications.

He also blamed shoddy works on ageing construction equipment in the country and advised members to prepare their own certificates and submit them to the Consultants for vetting to eliminate shoddy works. Mr. Obeng commended the regional secretariat for its efforts towards the growth and progress of the Association.
