Construction at Circle causes traffic jam

Construction work on the three-tier interchange at the Kwame Nkrumah Circle which began in September last year has created traffic jams on some roads leading to circle as the contractors work to divert utility service lines.

The routes affected are Kaneshie to Circle, Achimota to Circle, Adabraka to Circle and Osu to Circle, and motorists plying these routes have been given alternative routes.

Motorists moving from Accra to circle now have to use the diversion from Mr Biggs through to Adabraka taxi rank to join one of the lanes which lead to Accra from the roundabout.

During a visit to the Kwame Nkrumah circle, GNA observed that the traffic jam had compelled some passengers to get down and walk instead of sitting in vehicles for hours.

Some of the drivers who spoke to GNA expressed worry over the traffic situation and said the situation had made their business slow and this had been made worse by the fuel price increases.

But the situation has played into the hands of sachet water sellers who are meandering through traffic, doing brisk business.

President John Dramani Mahama in October 2013 cut the sod for the construction of the interchange.

The project, which cost 74.88 million euro, is being jointly financed with credits from the Brazilian Government and the Ghana Government, and is scheduled to be completed within 24 months.
