Constitution Week launched at Suhum

Mr Ransford Agyapong, Member of Parliament (MP) for Suhum, has said the success of Ghana’s democracy depends on the people’s perception and understanding of the constitution and called on the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) to be adequately resourced to enable it work effectively.

He said the reason of celebrating the constitution week was to make the people aware of the importance of the constitution and accept the rule of law by defending it.

Mr Agyapong said this at the launch of this year’s constitution week at Suhum on Monday.

The theme for the this year’s celebration was, “a decade of constitutionalism in Ghana, strategies for consolidation.”

He said apart from working hard to make the public have an in-depth understanding of the constitution, the people must be made to understand the structures of the government and acknowledge the work of members of government.

Mr Patrick Cudjoe Asiedu, the District Director of NCCE, said though Ghanaians went through frequent military interventions, they quickly acknowledged the importance and the benefit of constitutional rule and have accepted it as the best system of governance.

The constitution, being the supreme law of the land, must be protected.
