Confirmed: Akufo-Addo says he’ll run again

Two-time Presidential Candidate of the main opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has confirmed, ahead of his own deadline, that he’ll run again for the presidency.

Nana Akufo-Addo said a few days ago that he would announce his decision whether to run again on March 20, 2014. But, while addressing Upper East regional executives of his party, the former Attorney General, either strategically or inadvertently, jumped ahead of himself.

He said: “Thank you once again for coming. We’ll keep in touch and, hopefully, if everything goes right for me in the contest for the leadership, we’ll be in a position to work together very very closely to advance our common interest.”

Nana Akufo-Addo returned home a week ago after a six-month political hiatus following the Supreme Court’s affirmation of President John Mahama’s 2012 victory in a long-drawn election petition.

He spent that period in London to reflect on his political future and also consult God about the way forward.

Nana Akufo-Addo has been touring parts of the country since he returned from London. He has so far been to the Eastern and Ashanti regions and lately the Upper East region to announce his return from London, per Ghanaian tradition, as well as consult with party executives and traditional leaders about his political future.

Nana Akufo-Addo’s likely competitors include two former Ministers of Trade – Alan Kyeremanten and Dr Kofi Konadu Apraku. Other speculated names include Ghana’s former High Commissioner to the UK and Ambassador to Ireland, Isaac Osei and former Health Minister Dr Richard Anane.
