Conference on Peace, Environment to be held in Accra

A two day regional conference on environment and peace will be held in Accra from Thursday November 6, to Friday November 7, 2014 at the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping and Training Centre.

The conference will discuss challenges confronting the oil and gas sector, using the Nigerian situation as a case study with participants drawn mainly from government, private sector, youth groups, security services and the academia from Ghana and Nigeria.

At a press briefing prior to the opening of the conference in Accra, Comrade Musheff Sherriof, Executive Director of the Nigerian based Centre for Environmental Justice & Peace, organizers of the event, said it would bring together key stakeholders in the oil and gas and security industry to deliberate on issues pertaining to oil and gas revenue management.

Other institutions collaborating to organize the conference include the Ministry of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation (MESTI), Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and Net Impact Ghana.

Key personalities including vice chancellors and state officials from both countries will address the conference.

It is expected that participants would come out with workable solutions aimed at ensuring that the negative effects of oil and gas production are minimized.

Comrade Sherriof said as part of the conference, an Awards Gala would be held to honor some distinguished personalities who had contributed immensely to the promotion of environmental sustainability, peace and security in the Sub-region.

He thanked MESTI and other collaborators for their support to ensure a successful conference.
