Complete rehabilitation work on Awutu Lorry Park- GPRTU

Awutu-Beraku (C/R), May 4, GNA-Leaders of the Awutu Beraku branch of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union of the Trades Union Congress (GPRTU) have appealed to the authorities of the Awutu/senya District Assembly to ensure early completion of the rehabilitation work on the main lorry park in the district capital without delay.

To them, the delay in completing the work has given commercial drivers operating in the area the excuse to operate on the main Accra-Cape Coast Highway which virtually crosses the township. Mr Kobina Otabil and Mr Agya Acquah, Chairman and Secretary, respectively of the branch, jointly made the call in an interview with the Ghana News Agency at Awutu-Beraku at the weekend. The two leaders expressed worry that the illegal operation of drivers on the road side was responsible for the unnecessary killings of pedestrians in the community through motor accidents. Mr. Otabil and Mr. Agya Acquah also stressed the need for early reconstruction of the Awutu-Beraku -Bontrase road to facilitate the evacuation of foodstuffs and cocoa from the area to the big towns. Mr. Agya Acquah said that besides helping to inject a high sense of discipline in commercial drivers in the area, early completion of the rehabilitation works on the main lorry park would assist the District Assembly generate substantial revenue from the lorry park tolls annually.

He assured the District Assembly that leaders of the local GPRTU were prepared to assist it in its revenue collection activities as soon as the project was completed.

The leaders were of the opinion that, notwithstanding the inability of the assembly to finish the refurbishing works on the park, a task force should be put in place immediately to force commercial drivers in and outside the area to make the uncompleted lorry park their parking and loading centre to curb road accidents in the town.
