Community threatens timber company

Mr. Samuel Abuniwah, Assembly Member for Agyarekrom Electoral Area in Asunafo South District , has called for the stoppage of Lumber Locks Limited (LLL), a timber company, from operating in the area.

He alleged at the Assembly’s meeting at Kukuom that the activities of the Company “have destroyed River Abonyere, the only source of drinking water for the people in the area”.

The Assembly Member said as a result the people of a farming community called “Ma Wo Sekan Nye Nam” had to trek for about three kilometers to Agyarekrom to fetch good drinking water, a situation that was hampering economic activities.

Mr. Abuniwah said several warning letters had been served on the company’s office in Kumasi to desist from the bad practice but “they have proved adamant”.

“Failure of the Assembly to take a collective decision to stop the company may compel the people of the affected communities to take a drastic action by stopping the company from operating in the area”, he said.
