Community petitions IGP over rampant motor stealing

There is growing alarm among residents of Jacobu in the Amansie Central District over the rampant stealing of motor bikes, following which the residents have called on the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to intervene.

Within the past six months, 42 motor bikes have been stolen from their owners in the community.

Mr. Richard Frimpong, one of the victims, who called at the Kumasi Office of the Ghana News Agency (GNA) to complain about the situation, criticized the police in the area for not doing enough to go after those suspected to be behind the crime.

He expressed disappointment at their lackadaisical attitude saying that, “there are clear leads and for strange reasons the police are refusing to follow to apprehend the offenders”.

he claimed that one of the stolen bikes had been found, and that a serving Police Chief Inspector at Kofiase in the Mampong Municipality (name withheld) had been implicated by the suspect who had been arrested.

The said officer, he insisted, had simply refused to cooperate with investigations fuelling suspicion of a cover up.

He told the GNA that the recovered bike, belonging to one Mr. Adjei Barimah, a banker, was found in the possession of one Isaac Awuah and he was arrested.

In his caution statement, Awuah mentioned the Chief Inspector as the person, who gave it to him.

He said the officer had not contradicted the claim by Awuah, adding that for reasons difficult to rationalize, the police simply would not act to unravel the mystery of all the missing bikes.

Mr. Frimpong demanded that the IGP ordered thorough investigations to get to the bottom of the matter, as well as ensure the prosecution of the suspected officer.
