Community Eager to Know How School Feeding Programme is Applied

Zuarungu (UER), Sept 11, GNA- The Zuarungu Moshie Community in the Bolgatanga Municipality of the Upper East Region at the weekend held a stakeholders’ workshop to ascertain the mode of implementation and impact of the School Feeding Programme in the area.

The Community Members explained that as stakeholders they ought to be abreast with developments, so that they would be able to monitor the programme’s progress.

The Regional Coordinator of the School Feeding Programme, Mr. Latif Solomon, explained the mode of operation of the programme, and said the community members would be empowered to go into Agricultural production to feed the school children.

This, he said, would also help generate employment for the community members since they would be engaged in farming, processing and packaging of the produce.

He stressed that the main objectives of the school feeding programme was to provide one balanced meal to each primary school child in order to reduce hunger and malnutrition in school children.

Mr. Solomon announced that a National Review Exercise was currently underway to fine-tune the programme document, update it and develop an action plan for 2007 to 2010.

He impressed on parents to take advantage of the system and send all children of school-going age to school.

The Programme Manger of Single Mothers Association, a Local Non-Governmental Organization based in the Upper East Region, Ms. Stella Abagre, announced that her outfit had acquired a Rice Processing Machine from donors, and appealed to the Regional Secretariat of the Feeding Programme to ensure that all rice harvested would be sent to that place for quality processing.

A Social Worker who hailed from the area, Mr. Samuel Zane, commended the people of the area for organizing the stakeholders workshop, saying it would enable them to monitor the success of the Programme.

The workshop was organized by the Single Mothers Association, and sponsored by German Development Services and the Social Enterprise Foundation of West Africa.
