Winneba (C/R) April 5 GNA-The Winneba District Forestry Division of the Forestry Commission, has held a day’s workshop on Nursery Management at Winneba for 45 Community Biodiversity Administration groups manning five forest Reserves in the District. The workshop was aimed at exposing the participants to the techniques of nursing tree seedlings of different species to be planted around the Akrabong, Obotumfo, Abasumba and Ahirasu Number one reserves that have been declared as globally significant biodiversity area of Ghana.
The Ahirasu number two reserve, is already fenced with acacia and other tree species.
Mr Gyase Amoako, District Forestry Manager urged the participants to nurse enough seedlings for the project and to be planted in the communities to serve as windbreaks.
Mr Peter Osei-Owusu from the Resource Management Support Centre of the Forestry Commission, Kumasi, asked the participants to soak the seeds in water for days before planting to ensure early germination. Mr Asiedu Okrah, Liaison Officer for Eastern, Central, Ashanti of the Forestry Service Division, advised the participants to establish tree nurseries on sloppy grounds and not in waterlog areas to facilitate good harvest.
