Communities want to be part of Nkwanta North District

Kpassa, Nov. 26, GNA – The Nkwanta North District Assembly has petitioned government to address urgently the challenges inherent in the demarcation of its southern district boundaries to enhance development. In a resolution adopted at its Ordinary Assembly session, it labelled the issue as a security threat and raising tension in the area. The chiefs and people of Agou, Jumbo One and Two, who are situated on the southern fringes of River Kpassa, have continued to agitate since 2004 to be part of the newly created Nkwanta North District. The chiefs and people of the affected communities with estimated population of 5,000 have since 2004 boycotted all national and local level elections as their sign of indignation and protestation. The resolution reminded the government of its commitment and zeal to institute a boundary review committee as enshrined in its manifesto to be carried to the letter.

It is hopeful that early resolution of the anomaly would speed up development of the affected areas, with status as “no man’s land”. Mr Paul Levin Gyato, Nkwanta North District Chief Executive, told the Ghana New Agency that the agitation by the people was culturally, linguistically and economically inter-twined. He said there was no representation of the communities at the assembly, which is a drawback to the development process and affront to effective decentralization. 26 Nov 09
