Communities urged to assist in youth training

Baworo, (Ash), Aug.4, GNA- Mr Yaw Ahenkora Afrifa, Ejisu-Juaben District Chief Executive, has appealed to communities to assist the government to offer vocational and technical training to the youth to enable them to acquire employable skills.

He said acquiring technical and vocational training was the only practical way the youth could be gainfully employed to contribute to national development.

Mr Afrifa was speaking at graduation ceremony of the Baworo Integrated Community Centre for Employable Skills (ICCES) at Baworo in the Ejisu-Juaben district on Wednesday.

Twenty-five students who successfully undertook their National Vocational and Technical Institute’s (NVTI) examinations in joinery, carpentry, masonry, dressmaking and batik tie and dye, were presented with certificates.

The occasion coincided with the graduation of 20 people who took part in the Skills Training and Employment Programme (STEP) at the centre.

They were trained in batik tie and dye, soap making and catering. He commended the staff and volunteers of the centre for their selflessness and dedication to duty.

Mr Afrifa also commended the Baworo community for their continued support to the centre.

Nana Boateng, Ashanti Regional ICCES Co-ordinator, said about 14,000 youth had been trained throughout the country since the ICCES programme was introduced in the country in 1997.

He said those who passed out had many opportunities to further their training to the tertiary level and urged them not to relent on their efforts to continue their education.

Mr Paul Kwabena Darko, Baworo ICCES Manager, mentioned lack of hostel facilities, workshops and classroom blocks as some of the problems facing the centre.
