Communities receive cassava-processing machines

Gomoa Adzintem (C/R), Aug 31, GNA – The Ministry of Women and Children Affairs has presented four Machines worth 40 million cedis to four communities in the Gomoa District of the Central Region. The beneficiaries were Gomoa Adzintem, Gyankrom, Achiase and Kokofu. The machines would enable cassava farmers to process their produce into gari.

Ms Joyce Aidoo, Gomoa District Chief Executive who made the presentation on behalf of the Minister of Women and Children’s Affairs, Hajia Alima Mahama said the government would never discriminate in the sharing of the national cake.

She stated that President John Agyekum Kufuor had just ended his tour of the Central and Western regions to thank the chiefs and the people for voting him to power for the second term.

Ms Aidoo noted that the President would never say that he would refuse to visit areas where the people voted against him and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the 2004 elections.

She said the beneficiary communities would select one person to be trained in Cape Coast at the expense of the Gomoa District Assembly to repair the machines.

The DCE urged the beneficiaries not to keep the machines but to make use of them to serve the purpose it was donated to reduce poverty among the women.

Mr Fred Oscar Abban, Presiding Member of the Gomoa District Assembly, denied rumours that the government had given directives that parents and guardians should go to Accra to get papers before their children could be admitted into Senior Secondary Schools next academic year.

He said the computerised school selection and placement system introduced by the government this year was to avert payment of bribes and the agony parents and guardians went through before getting admission for their children into SSS.

Mr Abban stated that it was unfortunate that some people were distorting government policies and programmes meant to assist parents from going round to seek admission.

Nana Asare Andoh, Chief of Gomoa Adzintem on behalf of the beneficiaries thanked the government for the donation and assured the DCE that they would take good care of them. He appealed to Ms Aidoo to impress upon the contractors working on the road from Potsin Junction to Awomberw on the Swedru/Winneba main road to complete the contract on schedule. 31 Aug 05
