Ho, March 23, GNA – A five-member committee to probe the periodic disturbances between the Moslem community and Krachis in Kete-Krachi since 2002 was inaugurated in Ho on Wednesday. It is under the Chairmanship of Rt. Rev Gabriel Mante, Bishop of the Jasikan Diocese of the Catholic Church with Mr Bright Kornu, Director at the Volta Regional Coordinating Council (VRCC) as Secretary. Other members of the Committee are Dr James Kweku Brukum, Head of History Department of the University of Ghana, Legon, Alhaji Hamza Umar Danjumah, Regional Iman, Mr Stephen Ahiekpor, a retired Police Officer and Mr Kweku Mensah Akude, representing the Attorney General’s Department.
Mr Kofi Dzamesi, Volta Regional Minister who inaugurated the committee, tasked it to find out the underlying causes of the conflict, advise on steps to ensure they don not occur again, suggest ways to bring a lasting solution among the Zongo and Krachi communities and other relevant matters.
He said the recent conflict that occurred between January 25 and 27 this year “in the loss of property costing several millions of cedis and a few deaths”.
Mr Dzamesi said the region was grappling the Peki/Tsito and Nkonya/Alavanyo communal conflicts, which were “taking a heavy toll on our time and resources and cannot therefore afford to have additional conflicts…”
He appealed to the committee to work assiduously to remove the source of the conflict and “build mutual trust between the two communities for them to live together in peace.”
Rt. Rev. Mante said the committee had “a heavy responsibility to grapple with” and promised that they would not fail. The committee has three months to submit a report.
