Accra Mr Emile Short, Commissioner for Human Rights and Administrative Justice, today inaugurated a 13-member committee to monitor the implementation of the Convention on the Elimination of all forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW). The sub-committee which will operate under the National Council on Women and Development (NCWD) and CHRAJ has representatives from the Council, CHRAJ, National Commission on Culture, Ghana Police Service and the ministry of Foreign Affairs. Others are the National Media Commission, Trades Union Congress, Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA), 31st December Women’s Movement and Parliament. The inauguration forms part of a week-long activity to mark the 22nd anniversary of NCWD. As part of the anniversary, Mr K.B. Asante, a retired educationist and diplomat, delivered the first Annie Jiagge Memorial Lecture instituted in honour of the first president and founding member of the Council. Ghana signed CEDAW in 1986 under which countries are obliged to pursue policies to eliminate discrimination against women and remove laws and practices which violate women’s rights.
