Committee On Makola Disturbances Presents Report

Accra,(Greater Accra Region) 15 Oct. An appeal has gone to the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) and the Makola Market Company (MMC) to consider reserving some stalls for members of the Makola Welfare Union who have still not registered at the Agbogbloshie market. This is contained in the six-point recommendation of the three- member committee of enquiry into the grievances of the traders at Makola Number two market. It called on the MMC to give a public assurance that the Makola fire victims previously engaged in perishable goods would be considered at the shopping mall should they convert to non-perishable goods. The statement said traders at Makola number two should be given the first option in the allocations at the new shopping mall. The committee said trading at Angelina House, Kwaseadwaso, Rex Onion and Ebenezer Markets and Kinbu road should be stopped and relocated at the Agbogbloshie market. The committee recommended that AMA should be more involved in the decisions of the Board of MMC, especially in the fixing of the cost of stalls and stores as well as its registration and allocation. Mr. Joshua Alabi, Greater Accra Regional Minister, set up the committee following a petition by a section of the traders to Parliament against the decision to move them to the newly built Agbogbloshie market. Members of the committee were Mr. Kenneth Johnfia, Chief Economic Planning Officer, Greater Accra Regional Co-ordinating Council, Mr. Nii Nortey Duah, Presiding Member, AMA, and Mr. Jerry Akwei Thompson, Ga District Chief Executive.
