Colonial mentality of public officers has cost many nations – Mahama

President John Dramani Mahama, Thursday, told leaders attending the ongoing summit on corruption in the United Kingdom that many nations have lost so much money they could have used in their developmental drive as a result of the lackadaisical attitude of some public officers.

He told the leaders that many people in responsible positions still have the colonial mentality that public money belongs to Government and therefore could be used any how.

“Sometimes some public officers and members of the public who know what advice to give to help in the solution of a problem showed total indifference unless someone in high position intervened”, he noted when addressing the leaders.

President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari, also addressing the gathering described the Ghanaian leader as an impartial selfless President who has been doing great things for the ECOWAS sub-region to complement the work of the AU and the UN in international development.

He said, the problem of international development are many and since no one State nor group of States could claim to be capable of finding a lasting solution to them, the present international signpost is a signal to all on the road to international co-operation and total commitment to the ideals of strong institutions.

“Our sub-region is blessed to have very intelligent leaders like the Ghanaian leader and others whose determination to transform their countries is admired globally. That is what I consider to be the challenge for those of us who have pledged to pursue the search for a world order based on true freedom, justice and dignity”, he noted.
