The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has said that in spite of expressions of commitment made by all ECOWAS members to regionalism, colonial divisions continue to keep Africa on the margin of the great developments of the modern era. The Acting Chief Director of the Ministry, Mr Annan Cato, said currently it is easier for a businessman in any country in Europe to do business across the markets of the majority of ECOWAS countries than for a Ghanaian to do the same”. Mr Cato made the remarks when he launched a book, ”Meeting the Challenges of Regionalism in Africa” in Accra. The book is the product of a workshop on regional integration in Africa, which was organised by the University of Ghana, in collaboration with the Association of African Universities (AAU) in 1996. Mr Cato asked the publishers to pursue exchanges with the academic communities in other West African countries on the outcome of the research on regional integration. He therefore pledged the foreign ministry’s willingness to assist and sustain the projects in the near future.
