Cocoa farmers welcome Akuafo Cheque system

Nyinahin (Ash), Dec. 12, GNA 96 The Nyinahin Traditional Council has commended the government for the introduction of Akuafo Cheque system, which they have described as laudable. The Council said the system has saved cocoa farmers from being attacked by armed robbers.

Nana Otibuaduaa, Akwamuhene of Nyinahin, made the commendation when Mr Isaac Osei, Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD) called on the chiefs during a tour of the area at Nyinahin in the Atwima-Mponua district at the weekend. He, however, said cocoa farmers in the area do not get quick service when they go to the banks to cash their cheques. Nana Otibuaduaa said the situation, if not checked would make the farmers lose interest in the Akuafo Cheque system. He therefore requested for additional banks at Nyinahin to solve farmers problems.

He urged the government to put up permanent district agriculture office at Nyinahin to enable farmers to interact with agricultural extension officers.

Nana Otibuaduaa also appealed to the government to establish rural enterprise in the district to create employment for the youth while re-echoing the farmers pledge to pay for the fertilisers they bought on credit last year.
