President John Dramani Mahama has dissolved the Governing Board of the Narcotics Control Board.
A statement from the Flagstaff House said: “Further actions, according to the Chief of Staff, Prosper Bani, will follow in due course.”
The dissolution of the Governing Board of the State anti-narcotics agency follows the recent arrest at Heathrow Airport, of a Ghanaian Lady, by UK authorities for trafficking 12.5kgs of cocaine to London.
Nayele Ametefeh is currently being held by UK authorities.
NACOB issued a statement, following her arrest, to say it collaborated with the UK authorities in the arrest.
However, the UK High Commission in Ghana issued a statement denying any such collaboration.
It said UK authorities had no knowledge the suspect was travelling to their country.
Security Analysts including Dr Kwesi Aning and David Agbee have said the development dents Ghana’s image as well as robs NACOB of some credibility in the fight against drugs.
The dissolution of NACOB’s Governing Board also comes barely a day after Dr Aning told STARR NEWS that heads must roll at the anti-drugs agency following the UK’s denial of any collaboration with NACOB in Ametefeh’s arrest, contrary to NACOB’s claim to that effect.
Critics, including the main opposition New Patriotic Party have also wondered how the suspect carted 12.5kgs of drugs in her briefcase and handbag without it being detected at Ghana’s Kotoka International Airport.
