Cobbler jailed for defilement

Accra, June 28, GNA – An Accra Circuit Court on Tuesday sentenced a 32-year-old cobbler, Alfred Afriyie to eight years imprisonment for defiling a seven-year-old girl.

This was after the court had found him guilty for defilement.

Before handing down the sentence, Afriyie told the court that: “I did not defile the girl and I challenge anyone who saw the victim enter my room to come and testify to the court. The victim cannot stand me.”

The court presided over by Mrs Georgina Mensah-Datsa, however, in her judgment noted that prosecution had been able to establish a case against Afriyie.

Afriyie in his defence before the court had denied ever knowing the victim and the mother.

Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Sarah Acquah said between April and May this year, the victim’s mother found out that the victim had developed bad body odour.

The victim’s mother decided to examine her vagina and found out that the victim had been defiled.

ASP Acquah said when the victim’s mother questioned her; she told her that it was Afriyie, who had defiled her, on four occasions.

Prosecution said the victim’s mother reported the incident to the Nima Police where Afriyie was arrested and a medical form was issued to the victim for examination and treatment.
