The Tema Leo Club on Saturday organised a dental screening programme for children of the Mexico number One Junior Secondary School at Community two as part its monthly community service.
60 children were examined free of charge, by Dr Victor Nyamalor, a Dentist at the Port Dental Clinic. Out of the number, 18 of them found to have tooth decay were referred for special attention at the clinic at half the actual cost.
Dr Nyamalor said he was impressed with the children’s oral hygiene and urged them to brush their teeth regularly to remove all food particles trapped in between the teeth. He said it is the teeth that make the mouth smell, explaining that, after eating, food particles are trapped in between the teeth. “These food particles decay after they have been broken down by bacteria, resulting in mouth odour and mouth diseases like gum bleeding and tooth decay”.
Mr Samuel Agyare, immediate past president, said the club chose dental screening as its project for October, because it had realised that the youth paid little attention to oral hygiene.
He said the clubs had in the past presented items to orphanages, organised AIDS awareness and eye screening programmes in Tema and held a party for orphans at the Missionaries of Charity home, near Ashaiman, last week.
Miss Sally Tibo-Mensah, Headmistress of the school thanked the club for the special care given the children and appealed to the club members to visit the school regularly to enable more children to benefit from the service.
