CLOGSAG won’t bow to threats to withhold salary – Asamoah

The Civil and Local Government Staff Association of Ghana (CLOGSAG) has said it will not succumb to what it calls threats by Employment and Labour Relations Minister Haruna Iddrisu to freeze their August salaries if they do not call of their strike.

CLOGSAG declared a nationwide strike on Wednesday 27 July to demand the payment of interim premium for its members.

Although the National Labour Commission has declared the industrial action as illegal, the group has remained resolute. This has led to a warning from Mr Iddrisu that the workers risk losing their salaries if they do not go back to work.

But the Director of Compliance and Grievances of CLOGSAG, Kwame Asamoah, speaking to Class News, said they would continue to fight for their legitimate claims and would not be intimidated.

“Let me make it clear that CLOGSAG does not fear any intimidation from any quarters. This issue about interim premium is not today, yesterday, a month ago, or one year – it’s about five years ago. It has been with Labour Commission and then Fair Wages and Salaries Commission.

Then the Labour Commission withdrew the case; he (Mr Iddrisu) took us there. So, for the Minister to say we are going to forfeit our salaries for August, if it means we have to fight with our salaries, we are ever ready to fight it. …This warning is a threat but we are not perturbed by those threats,” he stated.
