Clergyman proposes two-term for MPs

Kumasi, Oct. 26, GNA – A Clergyman has proposed an amendment to the constitution to enable it provide for only two terms of office for Members of Parliament (MPS) just like in the case of the President. Primate S. K. Adofo, Spiritual Head of the Brotherhood Church, who made the proposal, said since the constitution stipulates that the President should have a two-term of office, then it is only fair and prudent that the tenure of office of MPs should also be confined to a two-term.
Primate Adofo was speaking at the opening session of the annual spiritual festival of the Brotherhood Church at Asuoyeboah, a suburb of Kumasi on Tuesday.
The festival, which is known as the “Tabbora”, and devoted to intensive prayers and fasting to bring peace and security to bear on the nation, is being held under the theme, “Reaching Out to the Unsaved”. The one-week festival is being attended by over 5,000 clerics and members of the various branches of the church from Ghana, Cote d’Ivoire, Togo and Cameroon.
Primate Adofo said the present situation, in which the President has only two terms, while MPs could serve as long as their constituents needed them, is discriminatory and does not augur well for democracy in the country.
He contended that by not having any limit in terms of tenure of office for MPs, some could capitalize on it to perpetuate themselves in power, thereby denying the younger generation the chance of also entering into politics.
Primate Adofo stressed, “wisdom does not reside in the faculties of only the aged, and for that matter, there is the need for the aged to at some point opt out and give way for grooming of the youth in respect of politics and governance”.
He entreated Christians to continue to devote adequate time to pray to ensure that Ghanaians, who have the expertise and desire to render honest service to the nation, were encouraged and given the opportunity to do so. 26 Oct. 05
