Clergyman calls for peaceful elections in December

The Right Reverend Edward Ofori Donkor, Bishop of the Sekondi Diocese of the Methodist Church-Ghana, has appealed to political parties and churches to ensure peaceful electioneering and credible elections in December.

He stressed that the responsibility to maintain the integrity of the 2012 Election did not only lie with the Electoral Commission, but Ghanaians should collectively ensure free, fair and peaceful elections.

Rt. Rev. Edward Ofori Donkor made the call at the 51st Annual Synod of the Sekondi Diocese, which was on the theme: “The World my Parish: Evangelism, the work of the Church,” at Sekondi.

He asked Ghanaians to condemn politics of insults since it is detrimental to the peace and tranquility in the country.

Rt. Rev. Donkor appealed to political parties and their supporters to be truthful, sincere, honest and humble enough to apologize for their mistakes.

The District Chief Executive of Ellembelle District, Daniel K. Eshun, reiterated government’s commitment to ensuring peaceful elections in December.

He said the church and government were partners in national development and tasked the clergy to be bold in criticising the government and political parties to ensure peace.

Awulae Atibrukusu III, President of the Western Regional House of Chiefs, in a speech read on his behalf, called on the clergy to be circumspect in their preaching, to avoid being dragged into partisan politics.**
