The Superintendent Minister of the Wa Methodist Church, the Very Reverend Samuel Hagan, on Wednesday called on Government to sponsor scientists to research into causes of blindness among children in the northern part of Ghana.
He said, the disease was increasing and Government and other stakeholders should be alarmed by the situation, since it could retard national development.
Rev. Hagan raised the concern at the inauguration of a GH¢16,000 mechanized borehole for the Wa School for the Blind, provided by MoneyGram, a money transfer company.
He said: “I feel there should be some causes to this catastrophe among children and government must do something to address the situation before it takes toll on our future leaders”.
Rev. Hagam appealed to Government, individuals and organizations to assist the school with infrastructure, learning and teaching materials.
Alhaji Dougo Yakubu, Wa Municipal Chief Executive, said, the school needed assistance and cited that the boys’ dormitory and the assembly hall of the school got burnt last year and water supply was inadequate.
He announced that the assembly had provided the school with a six-classroom block, and distributed school uniforms and exercise books free of charge to the students.**
