Clearing Agent charged with attempted tax evasion

A clearing agent of Inter Ocean Shipping Company in Tema, Mr. Osei Kyeremanteng today appeared before a circuit tribunal in Accra, charged with attempted evasion of custom duty. Kyeremanteng pleaded not guilty, and the tribunal, chaired by Mrs Elizabeth Anderson-Yeboah, remanded him until April 29 to enable the prosecution to complete its investigations. Police Inspector Alex Yartey Tawiah told the tribunal that a businessman, Mr Edmund Osei Kofi, imported a BMW car and gave eight million cedis to Kyeremanteng to clear the vehicle from Tema port. The accused made use of the money and prepared fake documents to clear the car, but his attempt failed. The complainant reported the matter to the Police, after several unsuccessful demands for his car or the money from the accused.
