CJ designates courts to deal with specific cases

Accra, July 16, GNA – The Chief Justice, Mrs Justice Georgina Wood has designated 12 High and 12 Circuit courts across the country to deal exclusively with cases such as robbery, narcotics and rioting with weapons.

The others cases are taking part in unlawful assembly armed with an offensive weapon or missile; importation of explosives; and offences under the Arms and Ammunition Act. A statement signed in Accra on Wednesday said the exercise took off on July 2 and already some of the courts, especially those in Accra, had stared work in earnest. It said in areas where there was only one High Court and/or Circuit Court, those courts would be responsible for handling such cases. “The import of the directive is that the courts will not entertain any civil and other criminal cases but will deal exclusively with those cases.”

The Chief Justice appealed to the general public, especially complainants and those who would be invited as witnesses, police prosecutors, and lawyers to give their maximum cooperation to the courts in order to have these cases disposed of expeditiously. 16 July 08
