CJ charges youth to promote peace

The Chief Justice, Mrs. Justice Georgina Wood, on Tuesday urged the youth to serve as ambassadors of peace and agents of change in their various communities.

She said the youth have a critical role to play to ensure peace and stability in the country especially, in an election year like 2012.

Mrs. Justice Wood was speaking at the 5th Annual Lady Chief Justice’s Mentoring Programme for selected Senior High Schools in Accra.

The programme, which was on theme: “Access to justice: A tool for peace and stability”, is to enable the students understand the role of the judiciary in the country’s democratic dispensation.

This year’s mentorship programme is being attended by 60 students and seven tutors from various schools including Achimota School, Sekondi College, Methodist Senior High School, Diabenekrom Senior High School, GSTS College, Ahantaman Senior High School and Adiembra Senior High School.

Mrs. Justice Wood also expressed happiness about the promotion of five female judges to the Court of Appeal which she said would go a long way to ensure gender balance in the judiciary.

She said the new judges were promoted based strictly on merit through examination and interviews by the Judicial Council.

She charged the students to emulate the new female judges and work hard to achieve their ambitions.

Mrs. Justice Wood commended the Danish International Development Agency (DANIDA) for their continuous support to the judiciary and the Chief Justice’s Mentoring Programme over the years.
