Circuit courts are not allowed to try armed robbers

Tema, July 28, GNA – A Judge at Tema Circuit Court ‘B’, Mr Stephen Teye, has said his court does not try cases of armed robbery and cannot, therefore, grant armed robbers bail.

He explained that armed robbers who are indicted by the Attorney General’s office are sent to the High Courts for trial.

Mr Teye was reacting to appeals from the defence to grant bail to six armed robbers who appeared before him. ”I am much concerned about their long incarceration in prisons for almost three to four years.” He urged the police investigators to chase the dockets on the accused persons at the Attorney General’s Department

Mr K. Akyeampong, counsel for two of the accused persons, said his clients had appeared in the court 55 times, since 2001 and they have still not been charged.
