Circle traders suspend business to commemorate June 3 disaster

Traders at the Kwame Nkrumah Circle, close to the June 3 Flood and Fire Disasters, have decided to stop all trading activities from Wednesday for three days.

This is to commemorate the one-year anniversary of the disaster that claimed over 150 lives.

The traders, who sell along the Vienna-Odawna area, say they will organize a cleanup exercise to rid the place off filth especially plastic waste.

Speaking with 3 News, Andy Best, station manager of the Odawna Apawu Station, the venue, where the twin disaster happened said the move is to make the drainage there clean to allow free flow of water, to prevent flooding and another disaster, as the rains set in.

“We miss our fallen brothers, and in their memory, we want to stop all trading and remember them.

“We will use the day to mourn them and also clean this place. We believe that, our gutters must be clean and free to prevent any flooding, now that the rains are coming,” he explained.

Mr. Best said not enough has been done by government to forestall flood.

“After the incidence, we haven’t seen anything from government. So we have come up with our own measures. Any time we see the clouds gathering, we just pack up. We do not want a repeat of last year’s incident.”

In a related development, an art work of plastic of a man carrying a blackened person to signify the burnt body in front of the defunct GOIL filling station has been erected to remind the public of the souls that were perished that day.

The art work is also supposed to bring a flash back of the general shock of the tragedy and awaken the attitudinal change in the citizens of Accra.
