Keta, April 25, GNA – Mr Joseph Amenowode, Volta Regional Minister has observed that the Church was fast becoming irrelevant in the moral reformation of society.
He said this was because of the lust for wealth among some church leaders, who exploit their members, beyond measure. Mr Amenowode was addressing the first Synod of the Evangelical Presbyterian (EP) Church, Ghana’s Southern Presbytery, at Keta on Friday under the theme: “Enhancing Human Dignity”.
He said the increasing negative attitudes of church leaders and some members reflected badly on the image of the church. “The conduct of such leaders and members keep people wondering whether the church still lives up to its tenets of winning souls for Christ,” Mr Amenowode stated.
He asked Christians to reflect on the virtues of Christ, stressing that the Church needed to reassess and re-strategize its role against the growing moral decadence in the world today.
He, however, commended the Church for its contribution towards the provision of social amenities and in conflict resolution and called for stronger government and church partnership to develop the country. Mr Amenowode said government was focused on the agenda of building a prosperous nation through the appropriate infrastructure and monetary policies.
Rev. Emmanuel Amey, Chairman of the Presbytery asked government to remain focused on its Better Ghana Agenda, pledging that the Church would do a lot more to improve the lot of ordinary Ghanaians. He suggested that part of the proceeds from Ghana’s oil and gas find should be used to create educational opportunities for Ghanaians. Mr Sylvester Tornyeava, Keta Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) appealed to the Church to assist government to fight corruption, which he said remained a setback to the agenda of building social equity.
