Accra, March 22, GNA – The First Church of Christ Scientist on Tuesday donated food items and used clothing to the Street Academy, a sports-based Non-Governmental Organizations (NGO) in Accra.
The donation worth 1.5 million cedis forms part of the church’s outreach programme to aid the under-privileged in the society.
Madam Betty Bossman, President of the Church who made the donation told the GNA Sports that the members of the church were moved by the plight of the children at the school to make contributions to ameliorate their plight.
She said the donation is meant to be a frequent exercise in order to ensure a close touch on the growth and development of the children at the school.
Madam Bossman said the Church also sees it as their duty to contribute to the reduction of street children in the country “since this is the only way that the nation can be free from all forms of crimes and deprivation”.
Ataa Lartey, founder of the Academy expressed appreciation to the church for coming to their aid and prayed that other religious and corporate bodies would come to their assistance to better the lots of the children.
He said the management of the Academy would put the items to good use to ensure that the inmates of the Academy derive maximum benefit from it.
Ataa Lartey called on other bodies and the Department of Social Welfare and Community Development to extend similar gestures to the Academy to promote a worthy cause.
The Academy has for the past years taken children away from the streets and provided with basic education as well as giving them the opportunity to explore their sporting talents.
The inmates are trained in football, boxing, hockey and table tennis among other activities.
They are currently participating in the on-going Akosombo Textiles Limited (ATL) National Table Tennis League competition.
