Christians’ silence over societal evils sinful – Veep

Vice President Kwesi Amissah-Arthur says it is a sin for Christians and the clergy to be silent on societal wrongs, including the negative things in the political arena.

“We people of faith must live our faith and when things are going wrong, we must say it. It is sinful for us when things go wrong and we refuse to say it, either because we are afraid or compelled not to say it,” Mr Amissah-Arthur said.

He disclosed this during a recent speech at the 42nd General Council meeting of the Church of Pentecost in the Central Region.

To him, politicians are called to serve the people of Ghana and, thus, it will not be out of place for religious people to add their voice to shape policies and other interventions that will help in the development of the nation.

The vice president emphasised the need for peace and assured Ghanaians of government’s resolve to build a stable country as the November 7 presidential and parliamentary polls approach.

“The Christian principles and scriptures that you have quoted today are necessary for the peaceful, serene, nonviolent atmosphere in our country as we enter this election period. For me, it is competition to serve,” he added.

For his part, Chairman of the Pentecostal Church of Ghana, Apostle Dr Opoku Onyinah, admonished all political parties to refrain from insults and violence, and charged the electorate to vote based on competence and integrity.

“We should exercise our own conscience and then see those people who have integrity and who can continue to lead the nation,” he advised.
