Christ Presbyterian Church observes 170th Anniversary

Akropong-Akuapem (E/R), Aug. 8, GNA – The Akropong-Akuapem Christ Presbyterian Church on Sunday organized a commemorative service in honour of the Early Missionaries from Jamaica, who established the church some 170 years ago.

This laid the foundation for the Presbyterian Church in Ghana today.

Present at the Church service were delegations from Jamaica, Sierra Leone and descendants of the early missionaries in Akropong-Akuapem and Accra.

Preaching the sermon, the Moderator of the United Church of Jamaica and Cayman Islands, Rt. Rev. Dr. Roderich Hewitt, observed that God did not make any human being slave but their fellow human being enslaved them because of greed.

Rt. Rev. Hewitt called on Christians to stand up for what is right in any part of the world, no matter the situation. He said human strength does not depend on military power and that God had never relinquish his position as the Supreme Being to any supper power.

Rt. Rev. Hewitt said in the cross of Jesus Christ, the weak was always strong and urged Christians to always remain faithful to the words of Jesus Christ, even if it was not popular. As part of the anniversary, the website of the Christ Church was launched and dedicated in memory of all those, who had contributed in various ways in nurturing the Church.

Later, Rt. Rev. Hewitt was assisted by the Moderator of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana, Rt. Rev. Dr. Yaw Frimpong-Manso to inaugurate a 200-million-computer training centre for the Youth Resource Centre of the church.

Briefing the media, Rev. George O. Kwarpong, Akropong District Minister of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana (PCG) said the Danish Government donated the computers to the Church for distribution to schools.

He said the church received 165 computers and after distribution to the schools, 50 were donated to the center, of which 20 had been installed.
