Accra, Oct 7, GNA – The family of the late Ebenezer Ofori-Atta, a businessman on Tuesday appealed to the government to help them re-arrest and prosecute Mr Chris Asher Jnr, a lawyer for allegedly murdering their brother.
The family said: “All we are saying is that re-arrest Mr Chris Asher Jnr. Let the trial of the case involving the murder of our brother Ebenezer Ofori continue. As aggrieved family members we maintain the stand that Chris Asher is the murderer who killed our brother, father and uncle”.
Mr Frank Okyere, spokesperson of the family and a brother of the deceased told a press conference in Accra that Mr Asher was first arrested after the murder of his brother in 1982 and was taken to court but, “he left the country without our notice”.
The family also refuted allegations that the deceased was an agent and informant of the PNDC, saying, ” Chris Asher, trying to portray our brother as an informant for the PNDC and that the PNDC killed our brother is a grievous lie”.
The spokesperson said the entire family was opposed to the PNDC military regime and that “none of us is a member of that regime, so people should stop reading politics into our quest for justice”.
“It is indeed disheartening that for all this time Chris Asher can roam freely around without being arrested and all attempt made by the family for the police to re-arrest him had been futile”.
Mr Okyere explained that Asher was a friend to the deceased and himself (Mr Okyere) and that they were all supporting each other until Asher was made a chief in their hometown, Akim-Osorase in the Eastern region.
He said after sometime, the friendship became sour and Ofori-Atta was found murdered from a gunshot on that fateful day, September 14. He said Asher was suspected because the Police found the deceased’s briefcase, passport, cheque books, wristwatch and other document in Asher’s mother’s home at Nsaba in the Eastern Region.
